Xcel Energy’s Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant continues to deal with a 2022 leak of tritiated water, the latest being a January spill from a hose of some of the contaminated groundwater.

As Xcel Energy continues remediation efforts following a November 2022 tritium leak at its Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant, the company reported that some of the contaminated water was inadvertently released last Thursday.

“On Jan. 16, around 450 gallons of the recovered groundwater … was released from a hose and onto the ground in a fenced-in area on the plant property,” Xcel Senior Media Relations Representative Theo Keith said in an email to the Monticello Times, claiming this amount is a miniscule fraction of the total groundwater recovered to date.
