School boards often do their critical work in quiet board rooms, usually with only a few members of the public in the audience. Without much fanfare, school boards provide the governance structure for the school district including policy development and oversight and financial stewardship of federal, state and local resources. School boards are made up of elected community members who serve as public servants with a nominal stipend for their time and effort.

Thriving and vibrant school districts almost always have a high functioning school board with individuals working together to strengthen the learning opportunities and experiences for students. One of the most important positions on a school board is the board chairperson. This person works with the superintendent to set board agendas and facilitates the board meeting business in a manner that engages all members of the board.
