Secretary of State Steve Simon and House Democrats have asked the Minnesota Supreme Court to intervene in the partisan power struggle that kicked off the 2025 legislative session. Meanwhile, a separate court decision has further extended House Republicans' one-seat organizational majority.

On Jan. 23, the state’s highest court will hear their argument that House Republicans "usurped" the Secretary of State’s role as presiding officer for the first day of session and repeatedly met without a quorum present – in violation of the state constitution.
