Scott Wendell, a Columbus failed city council candidate and current planning commission member, was appointed over fellow planning commission member Lynn Carver-Quinn and Public Works advisory board member Russ McPherson to a less-than-two-year council seat by mayor Ron Hanegraaf after the council became deadlocked over who to appoint.

The debate over Wendell began at the Wednesday, Jan. 8 meeting when the council was to determine a process for how to fill the vacant council seat previously occupied by the now mayor. That lead council members Jennifer Lattin and Rob Busch stating they were not in support of Busch, with Lattin referencing newspaper clippings of Wendell, while Busch said to the Times in a separate interview it was Wendell’s past assault charges that caused him to say he couldn’t “morally” support Wendell’s appointment, even though he had read that Wendell was acquitted of those charges.
